On the go: Work and Pensions Committee chair Frank Field has resigned the Labour Party whip, citing a hostile atmosphere and alleged anti-semitism within the party.

A spokesperson confirmed that Field will continue to chair the select committee that he has led since July 2017.

He will sit as an Independent Labour MP and “hopes to be in a position to seek the whip again as soon as possible”.

In a letter to Nick Brown, opposition chief whip, Field describes Labour’s leadership as “becoming a force for anti-semitism in British politics”.

“A culture of intolerance, nastiness, and intimidation now reigns in too many parts of the party nationally and is sadly manifest within my own constituency Labour Party in Birkenhead,” he adds.

In July, Field lost of vote of no confidence in his constituency, as local party members look to oust the WPC chair over his support for Brexit.
