On the go: Prime minister Rishi Sunak has appointed Mel Stride as the new secretary of state for work and pensions.
Stride replaced Chloe Smith, who had been given the role by former prime minister Liz Truss. Stride has been the chair of the Treasury select committee since October 2019.
Smith said it had been a “privilege” and thanked the staff at the Department for Work and Pensions “for their dedication to helping people into work and protecting the most vulnerable”.
Sunak has retained a number of ministers from Truss’s cabinet in key posts, including keeping Jeremy Hunt as the chancellor of the exchequer.
Hunt’s predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng was sacked earlier in the month after mounting pressure on the government to reverse the tax cuts announced in the ‘mini’ Budget.
The destiny of Alex Burghart, who was recently revealed as minister for pensions and growth, is currently unclear. Burghart replaced Guy Opperman, who, having been the longest-serving pensions minister, was sacked from his post by Truss.
