In its most basic incarnation, an exchange traded fund tracks a particular market index and, importantly, can also be readily traded throughout the day on a stock exchange. This second feature is the most distinguishable aspect between ETFs and more traditional index-tracking mutual funds, where liquidity has typically been, at most, daily.
